The History
Muddy Paws Bathhouse has been Bend's premier grooming salon since 2011. We want to thank you for your continued trust in our compassionate, professional, one-on-one bathing & grooming.
We know that consistency and transparency are key in pet grooming. Our commitment to you is to provide clear, and dependable pricing at Muddy Paws.
Reflecting this commitment, we have undergone a pricing restructure, in effect starting November 1st, 2024.
The Change
Our previous pricing structure was an hourly rate ranging from $50-65+/hour based on breed, age, size, coat condition and temperament. In our experience, this led to fluctuation in appointment prices.
Starting on November 1, 2024, we will switch to a service pricing system that is based on weight and coat type. There is a fixed price for each category, and for all additional services, add-ons, and fees.
These changes allow us to better estimate the time, tools, products, and techniques required to give your pet the best possible care.
If you have any additional questions regarding this change and how it may affect you, please do not hesitate to reach out, we would be happy to assist you!
Coat Types
Long & Complex Coats
This category may include, but is not limited to: curly, silky/drop, combination, wiry, and double coats.
Long-coated dogs have hair that can range from a few inches long, to reaching the floor. Their coats can be silky or coarse, and some have an undercoat while others do not. Curly coats in dogs are characterized by tightly wound or wavy hair strands forming curls or waves. Drop coats have long, silky and straight hair that hangs down from a dog's body. Combination coats consist of areas of shorter hair, usually on the body, and areas of longer hair, often found on the tail, ears, legs and under the belly. Wiry coats are a combination of two layers, soft undercoat, and a longer wiry topcoat. Breeds with these coat types may feel rough with a wiry appearance.
Dogs with coats in this category tend to mat easily and require frequent grooming to keep them healthy. Additionally, they require more frequent brushing at home to keep the coat tangle–free and to lead to a better grooming experience. See our Matting section for additional information.
Breed Examples: Poodle, Doodle, Havanese, Shih-Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Rough Coated Collie, Lhasa Apso, Portuguese Water Dog, Tibetan Terrier, Schnauzer, German Wirehaired Pointer
Short & Smooth Coats
Short coated dogs typically do not have featherings, but one length across the whole body. Their coats are often more coarse to the touch, and do not require haircutting to keep them healthy and happy. Smooth coats are dense and close to the skin, with hair typically not exceeding 1 inch in length.
These breeds still often shed heavily and require baths, to keep their skin and coat nourished and shedding to a minimum.
Breed Examples: Boxer, Pitbull, Vizsla, Great Dane, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Pug
Double Coats
Double coats are made up of two different layers. The first, outermost layer is a topcoat that consists of long, typically more coarse hairs. Beneath the topcoat is a short, soft, and dense second layer, usually referred to as the undercoat. Dogs shed their undercoat far more than the topcoat, especially as the seasons change, when you may notice excessive shedding, or “blowing coat”.
Double-coated dogs may fall into either the long/complex or the short/smooth category, depending on their individual coat. Some pups have a thinner, smoother coat that require less tools and product, and some have long, thick, heavy coats that mat easily and require more maintenance. Each pup will have their coat evaluated and the most appropriate category will be chosen.
Breed Examples: Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, Husky, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever
Every Pup is Unique
Often, it is easy to determine what category we will book your pup under, but some breeds may fall into multiple categories. Examples may include:
-
Dachshund or Chihuahua (may have long or short coats)
-
Jack Russel Terriers (may have smooth or long coats)
-
Labrador Retriever (double coated but also smooth)
In cases such as these, please give us a call and we will let you know which category your pet will fall into for scheduling and pricing purposes. Sometimes a photo of your pet, or an in-person evaluation is necessary for this; please plan to send us a recent picture of your pup, or stop by the shop to show off their unique coat!
Unique coats and cuts, such as Breed Standard (hand stripping, clean feet, skirts, etc) may incur additional costs. See our Special Handling Services page for more info.
